Saturday, August 25, 2012 the North Florida Springs Alliance held their 2nd Annual Advanced Skills Workshop with over 50 divers in attendance. The annual workshops present clinics on a variety of topics of interest to advanced divers. Although they are primarily directed toward cave diving, the subjects are of interest to any diver wishing to broaden their knowledge in areas of diving beyond regular training. The all day event was open to the public and held at the Orange Grove Pavilion at Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park near Mayo, Florida.
Along with a lot of camaraderie and friendship, attendees enjoyed presentations from recognized experts in the diving world. Gene Page presented Underwater Photography clinics to give insights from the professional level. Lamar Hires from Dive Rite did a presentation on Sidemount Diving in caves. David Zappala of Advanced Hydrotest shared some in depth information on SCUBA Tank Maintenance and Testing. Kelly Jessop did a clinic on Underwater Cave Survey and Bobby Franklin shed some light on his advanced diving with Rebreather Modifications. Guided Interpretive Trail Walks were also conducted by Mike Stine showing some of the work of the North Florida Springs Alliance.
Attendees were treated to a Bar B Q lunch and a variety of prizes were raffled, thanks to the generosity of a number of sponsors including Amigos Dive Center, Cave Adventurers, Cave Country Dive Shop, Cave Excursions, Dive Rite, Dive Outpost, Extreme Exposure, Hog Equipment, NSS-CDS and the NACD.
The North Florida Springs Alliance is continuing their work to assist the State of Florida in improving and maintaining Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park, Madison Blue, and Troy Springs. They are actively seeking new members and have a wide variety of projects planned for those wishing to get involved.
