Reward Associated With Ben McDaniel At Vortex No Longer Offered

The Ben’s Vortex Facebook page is reporting that they have been contacted by Shelby McDaniel to advise that the reward associated with the disappearance of Ben McDaniel at Vortex Spring near Ponce DeLeon, Florida is no longer being offered.

This has been a controversial issue in the cave diving community for some time because of concerns that the allure of reward money would cause other divers to put themselves at risk.

On the Facebook Page “Ben’s Vortex” it is stated that they received an email from Ben’s father, Shelby McDaniel, advising that the reward had been dropped. Mr. McDaniel is quoted on the Ben’s Vortex page- “We have removed the reward. We do not want anyone to get hurt or drown. When you talk to your dive friends you can tell them it is removed.”

Ben McDaniel disappeared while cave diving in Vortex Spring on August 18, 2010. After extensive searches by some of the most experienced and talented cave divers in the world his body has never been recovered and little evidence has been found. Many have speculated that the disappearance may have been staged.

The case has received extensive media attention with Investigation Discovery recently airing a television story on the case.

Ben’s Vortex is an independent documentary film by Jill Heinerth and Robert McClellan detailing the facts in the case. Information on the film is available at
